Traditionally speaking, crossbows are often thought of as difficult-to-use two-handed tools that were popular during medieval times. The original – and often cumbersome – models worked well for target practice and defending against the undead (see films like: Army of Darkness ) at the time. But in the fast-paced world of today, we need something a little lighter and quick on the draw to be truly effective against the undead or otherwise.
With recent advancements in both materials and weapon mechanics, things like the Avalanche Cobra Self-Cocking Tactical Crossbow has survivors and anti-zombie enthusiasts alike breathing a sigh of relief, followed by an uncontrollable smile of approval. Lightweight, yet durable options like the one-handed pistol grip style of the Cobra Self-Cocking Tactical Crossbow have made this type of defensive weapon/tool a viable option for everyday survival and outdoor use… Zombie apocalypse or otherwise.
THE BODY: With a bite that can easily reach the bone, the Cobra Self-Cocking Tactical Crossbow packs an incredibly powerful punch in a surprisingly compact form. Measuring 18 x 6 inches and weighing just under 2 lbs. the die-cast alloy and brass body with fiber-graphite limbs holds an 80-lb. draw weight capable of firing bolts up to 160 Feet Per Second (that’s about 109 miles an hour) or over 100 yards distance.Resting easily in hand, slung over the shoulder or peeking out the top of a pack, the light weight and relatively compact design of the Cobra Self-Cocking Tactical Crossbow lends itself to easy transport through rough and tumble terrain, disaster strewn streets, routine outings and weekend trips to the woods.
A set of windage and elevation wheels placed on the upper rail, click-tune to align with the crossbow sighting for simple spot-on targeting shot after shot. For survivors that prefer a little bit of laser-sighting in their lives, the included sighting can be retro-graded with a few spare minutes and a simple laser-light.To cock the bow it’s as simple as releasing the locking mechanism and drawing the string back with the pivot arm. You’re ready to go in moments, without having to contort your body or run the risk of pulling a muscle. When drawn back, the Avalanche® Self-Cocking Cobra Crossbow system securely locks both the tension and safety in place, making it a simple, safe and secure process every time.
With such an easy and fool-proof method to ready the crossbow for firing, users are left with the ability to quickly and safely work from one target to the next, even while on the move. In fact, with just a bit of practice, I was able to prep and pop-off 10+shots in about a 60-second time span… each with a satisfying and fairly stealthy “shwunk” sound as they left the rail and hit the target.
THE BOLTS: The 6-inch steel-tipped aluminum bolts that we used throughout our tests showed an average penetration of roughly 2-inches or more into solid wood targets (wooden planks and tree stumps). The bolts easily crashed through glass, slid right through 5-inch thick melons and even cracked (though did not fully penetrate) 1-inch thick coconuts.
With 15 bolts placed and reloaded up to 5 times each (totaling about 75 shots) we were happy to walk away with only 4 bolts that are no-longer useable and a pocket full of bolts in perfect working order. See the list below for details on the damaged bolts.
1. Bowed shaft – contact with cement wall.
2. Chunk missing from one side of plastic fletching – shot with another bolt.
3. Severely bent tip – contact with 1/2″ thick steel metal stand.
4. Broken off tip and fletching – contact with 1/2″ thick steel metal stand.
For the most part, once I got my sighting down and a few practice shots out of the way, I was able to place shot after shot straight and true through target after target. The Cobra Self-Cocking Tactical Crossbow comes with three 6 inch steel-tipped aluminum bolts, but you can get additional or replacement bolts for $14.99 per pack of 12 here: http://www.budk.com/product/12-Pack-Aluminum-Crossbow-Darts/156499.uts.
