The ever-evolving and complex world of the virus is nothing to be trifled with or ignored. Viruses can change drastically from one generation to the next, growing in strength and adaptability as they mutate into a more virulent form.
The amazing abilities of viral organisms to undergo such sudden and drastic changes means that we, as a people, are under constant threat of new and potentially deadly outbreaks and infection. That’s why news of a previously unknown strain of the influenza virus should be taken seriously.
Recently discovered after taking swabs from dead pigs at a slaughterhouse in Hong Kong, PPIV-1is a virus that the world definitely needs to keep an eye on. Closely related to some human influenza types, PPIV-1 is a paramyxovirus. These virus-types are known for cross species contamination, and causing severe epidemics in their hosts.
While University of Hong Kong microbiologist, Yuen Kwok-yung, warns that PPIV-1 could in fact jump from pigs to humans, as seen with H1N1 and the Nipah virus, it’s anyone’s guess when and if that will happen.
With the threat of viral pandemics and contamination constantly on the rise in this over-crowded and under-cared-for world that we live on, proper preparation and awareness is key to survival. For information on personal decontamination and quarantines, click the links below.
We’ll do our best to keep you up-to-date as important details on this newly discovered virus develop, but in the meantime, stay safe, stay mobile, stay alive.
